The season came to an abrupt end on Saturday as we dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to St. Mary's College in the first round of the CAC playoffs.
We started the game looking pretty solid and had a ton of possession in the first 30 minutes of the game. We moved the ball around well and didn't let St.Mary's get into much of a rhythm, but just like most of the season the offense never quite did enough to be dangerous.
Late in the first half St. Mary's took advantage of a counter attack and after we defended the initial break they picked up a loose ball in the box and put away the game winning goal with six minutes remaining in the half.
The second half was not what we needed to get back into the game and at the end of the day it would be hard to say we deserved to win. We certainly could have played better and thought we were capable of winning, but on the afternoon St. Mary's deserved to advance.
The season concludes with a 10-6-3 record. When we look back at what we accomplished this year after losing 19 players from last years team I'm sure we'll be pretty pleased with our performance, but right now it still stings a little as we thought we had the potential to go a little further.
The good news is that the core of a team that included 16 freshman and sophomores will be coming back and will have gained tremendous experience this past year. Three of our starting defenders along with our goalkeeper from our nationally ranked defense will be returning to give us the foundation of what we hope will be a championship contender in 2015. We will need to find a few impact players on offense, but the future is looking good for the Bobcat soccer program.
